Silicone roof coatings are renowned for their strong water resistance, long durability, and wide adaptability. Whether it's an indoor or outdoor surface, dry or damp substrate, silicone coatings hold up impressively well. Their core applications can be divided into three main categories:
Ideal for areas like rooftops, bathrooms, kitchens, balconies, and basements, silicone waterproof coatings are especially useful for the renovation and leak repair of older buildings. The application process is flexible and avoids the need for major demolition or disruptions to existing decor.
Silicone coatings are perfect for concrete roofs, exterior walls, windowsills, parapet walls, and expansion joints. They are also ideal for water tanks, reservoirs, and tunnels that require long-term water resistance.
For metal roofs, colored steel tiles, and sunrooms (which require special substrate treatment), silicone coatings are highly effective, especially in urgent leak repairs in low-temperature and high-humidity environments. The coatings' resistance to both high and low temperatures makes them an excellent choice for such conditions.
Before application, the surface must be clean, solid, and free from loose dust, oil stains, or cracks. If there are holes or cracks, they should be filled with cement mortar and smoothed out. Proper surface preparation is crucial to ensure the longevity of the waterproofing layer.
Tool Selection: Use a roller for large areas and a brush for corners and gaps to ensure every corner is covered.
Coating Method: Apply thin coats in multiple layers, following the 'thin coat, multiple passes' principle. The first coat should be applied at a thickness of 0.2-0.3mm. After the first coat has fully dried (usually in 2-4 hours, depending on temperature and humidity), apply the second coat perpendicular to the first for better water resistance.
Special Areas: Pay extra attention to corners and areas like pipe bases, floor drains, and other vulnerable spots. These areas may require 1-2 additional layers or the use of polyester cloth to reinforce the coating and prevent future leaks.
Ideal Conditions: Apply silicone roof coatings in temperatures between -10℃ to 40℃. Avoid applying in rainy, windy, or extreme sun conditions. Ensure the coated surface is not exposed to rain for 24 hours after application.
Curing Time: After applying the coating, allow it to naturally cure for 24-48 hours (longer in low-temperature environments). Do not proceed with subsequent renovations (such as tiling or painting) until the coating is fully cured.
Inspection Method: Conduct a water-tightness test. After curing, fill areas like bathrooms and balconies with water for 24 hours. If there are no signs of leakage or dampness on lower floors or walls, the coating has passed inspection.
The amount of silicone roof coating needed should be adjusted based on the surface's flatness, the number of coats, and the desired waterproof thickness. The following are the standard usage recommendations for silicone waterproof coatings:
Standard Waterproofing Requirement: Approximately 1.2-1.5kg per square meter - 2 coats, dry film thickness of 0.8-1.0mm.
Enhanced Waterproofing Requirement: Approximately 1.8-2.2kg per square meter - 3 coats, dry film thickness of 1.2-1.5mm .
For Leak Repair in Older Buildings or Areas with Cracks: An additional 10-20% extra coating is recommended to ensure uniform coverage and address surface defects.
Q: Does the surface of a silicone roof coating form an elastic waterproof membrane after application?
A: Yes, it does. The silicone coating has a certain degree of elasticity and can accommodate minor substrate movements. There is no need to add expansion joints.
Q: What should be done if there is bubbling or peeling after the application of the coating?
A: This is usually caused by improper surface preparation or the presence of water during application. In this case, remove the defective areas, re-treat the surface, and reapply the coating.
Q: How should silicone roof coatings be stored?
A: Store the unsealed silicone coating in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight. The shelf life of unopened coatings is typically 12 months.
