What is the Basic Differences between Silicone & Polyurethane Sealants?

Sealant is a widely used material, whether it is silicone sealant or polyurethane sealant. There are obvious differences between the two in terms of chemical properties, response to UV irradiation, service life and price.

A sealant is a material used to seal gaps and holes, making something airtight or impermeable to water. When you use a sealant, you effectively form a seal that prevents movement of fluids and liquids. Sealants are sometimes compared to caulking. The main difference between building caulking and sealing is the flexibility of the sealing. Sealants tend to be made of more flexible materials. This allows them to be used in areas and joints where some degree of contraction or expansion may occur. They are different from adhesives, but sealants with adhesive properties can be used.

1.The chemical difference between silicone sealant and polyurethane sealant

The main difference is at the chemical level. Polyurethane is an organic material. Silicone is an inorganic material. Polyurethane sealants; properties such as hardness, adhesion strength, thixotropy and flexibility can be easly manupulated according to need. Its mechanical strength and adhesion strength can be increased to very high levels compared to silicon.

One of the main differences between silicone and polyurethane sealants is the chemical composition. Silica gel is inorganic matter, polyurethane is organic matter. The main difference between organic and inorganic substances is the presence of carbon. Organic compounds contain a carbon atom. In most cases, hydrogen atoms are also present. For inorganic substances, it is not common to have both kinds of atoms present. Polyurethane is a polymer consisting of a series of organic atoms linked by carbamate. Silicone is a unique material because it contains both inorganic and organic compounds. These synthetic polymers contain silicon and oxygen atoms, which are linked by C-Si bonds. The composition of the chain exposes the organic elements of the structure to external influences. This is why silicone can be made into such a versatile sealant. Silicones are commonly used in construction as well as in the development of paints and food products. The chemical composition of both silicone and polyurethane sealants is important. This is because the composition affects the decomposition of the material. Organic and inorganic matter react differently when exposed to ultraviolet light from the sun. Inorganic materials are less responsive to UV light than organic chemicals. In the long run, polyurethane, an organic material, will return to its natural state when exposed to UV light. This affects the service life and versatility of polyurethane sealants.

2.Reaction of UV irradiation and sealant

Chemical composition is an important consideration when choosing the type of sealant to use. The type of compound affects its response to UV irradiation. Organic chemicals change as a result of UV exposure. Inorganic matter is much more stable.

The main base polymer used in silicone sealants is a stable compound called polydimethylsiloxane.

When silicones are exposed to UV light, the presence of inorganic compounds will prevent deterioration and decomposition. The SiO2-oxygen (Si-O) bond in silicone sealant is more resistant to ultraviolet light than the CO bond in polyurethane sealant. The result is that silicone sealants are inherently stable and more robust in terms of weather resistance. Polyurethane sealants can be made more stable to UV rays by adding chemicals designed to absorb UV rays or increase UV resistance.

3.Service life of silicone and polyurethane sealant

Silicone sealant has a longer service life than polyurethane sealant. Typically, polyurethane sealants produce results that last 5 to 10 years. The silicone joint can be used for more than 20 years. The difference comes down to the fact that silicone sealants do not break down due to UV exposure. Another factor to consider is temperature. Just as UV irradiation can alter organic chemicals, temperature changes can also affect the performance of sealants. If you have a joint, it will be affected by temperature changes, which may cause contraction or expansion. In this case, silicone sealants are almost always the best choice because they are more flexible.

4.The price difference between silicone and polyurethane sealant

For many people, cost is a consideration when choosing which type of sealant to use. There are two main issues to consider when weighing the choice between silicone and polyurethane sealants.

First, the cost of materials. Silicone is much more expensive than polyurethane. If you choose silicone, the initial fee may double. The second factor to consider is labor costs. If you plan to do the job yourself, choosing polyurethane seems like an economical option. However, keep in mind how much time you will have to invest in the next few years to get this done. If you are paying someone to do the work for you, consider: the cost of one course of silicone sealant compared to two, three or even four rounds of polyurethane sealant. In the long run, although the initial cost may be much higher, silicone may be more value for money.
