Polyurethane sealant is one of the most important adhesives used in modern vehicles. The formulation can also be adjusted to create sealants with different hardness levels and mechanical properties, allowing manufacturers to choose between soft, flexible bonding or high-strength structural bonding depending on the application.
In the automotive industry, polyurethane sealants come in several common types. The most widely used is polyurethane sealant for windshield bonding, a single-component, moisture-cured adhesive used to attach the windshield directly to the vehicle body. This bonding method improves safety, enhances body rigidity, and ensures the glass stays firmly in place. Structural polyurethane adhesives are another category, used to bond high-strength components such as SMC panels, FRP parts, and metal structures. These adhesives help support lightweight vehicle design while maintaining overall strength.
For interior parts, polyurethane adhesives are used on dashboards, door panels, headliners, and trims. Water-based PU adhesives are becoming more popular in interior applications due to their low VOC levels and environmental benefits. Finally, reactive hot-melt polyurethane (PUR hot melt) is used in fast-paced production lines because it cures quickly, contains no solvents, and offers clean and strong bonding performance for plastics and composite materials.
