The Difference Between Neutral Silicone Sealant and Acetoxy Silicone Sealant

The key difference between acetoxy silicone and neutral silicone is that acetoxy silicone can release acetic acid during the curing process, whereas neutral silicone can release alcohol during the curing process.

Acetoxy silicone dries faster than neutral silicone, and it can adheres well to a wide range of construction materials, particularly glass adhesives, including applications on windows and door frames, kitchen backsplashes, countertop sealing, bathrooms, and bathtubs. However, acetoxy silicone has a strong pungent smell during application and cure process. Furthermore, acetic acid released by the acetoxy silicone can cause some adverse effects on some delicate electronic components and it is corrosive to certain substrates and metals.

Neutral silicone sealant includes the oxime curing and alkoxy curing. In contrast to the acetoxy silicone sealant, the oxime silicone sealant emits methyl ethyl ketoxime, and the alkoxy silicone emits alcohol. These substances are non- corrosive, which make neutral silicone compatible with a wide range of materials, including glass, ceramics, tiles, metal, PVC, electronic appliances, auto and so on. 

Usually, this type of silicone is ideal for delicate surfaces. However, when using it for heavy-duty sealant jobs, we can use hybrid adhesives in combination with the neutral cure silicone to enhance the sealing capability. 

In addition, neutral silicone release a much subtler smell than acetoxy silicone, but it has a longer curing time than acetoxy silicone sealant.

In terms of price, it will be influenced by lots of elements like brands and regions and so on. But in terms of basics, there is no doubt the price of neutral silicone sealant is higher than acidic silicone glue. Because the neutral glass adhesive has little effect on the bonding material, and the cost of the acetic silicone glue is low. In a word, there is great difference between those two silicone sealants. It’s necessary to choose a suitable silicone sealant as required in order to work effectively.
