Leaking drain gutters can cause substantial damage to your property if not addressed promptly. Fortunately, with the right tools and technique, you can seal leaks and prevent water from compromising your home's foundation and structure.
In this blog post, we will walk you through the process of repairing your gutter seams, fixing gutter leaks, and sealing gutter end caps using sealant.
What are drain gutters?
Gutters play a crucial role in directing rainwater away from your home, protecting it against water damage. However, over time, gutters can develop leaks due to various reasons such as weather exposure, deterioration, or physical damage.
The good news is, with a simple application of the right gutter sealant, you can fix these leaks yourself. This gutter leak repair guide will show you how to address small holes, repair gutter cracks, and broken or poorly connected seams that can be effectively dealt with using sealant.
What you'll need?
Before you can start t fix gutters, you'll need to ensure you have a few things ready:
The seams connecting gutters are prone to water leaks. To repair them, follow these steps:
1. Clean the gutter
Begin by removing debris using a putty knife and flushing out the gutters with a garden hose. If there's rust or significant damage on metal gutters, use a wire brush and aviation snips to clean and cut away affected areas.
2. Dry the gutter
Allow your gutters to dry completely, ensuring a clean surface for the sealant to adhere properly.
3. Apply the sealant
Choose a sealant designed for outdoor use, offering waterproof and powerful sealing capabilities. Fill the leaking gutter joint with sealant, applying steady pressure to ensure deep penetration and coverage. It will cure fully in 24 hours.
Fixing gutter leaks
Follow the process given below -
1. Prepare the gutter
Make sure the area is clear of debris and always wear protective gloves to ensure safety.
2. Choose the right sealant
Consider drying time, water resistance, cost, viscosity, and ease of application when selecting your gutter sealant.
3. Apply the sealant to cracks
Use steady pressure to fill cracks, aiming for the sealant to be half the width of the crack. The sealant will skin over in 24 hours and cure in a week, though the gutter will be functional within three days.
Sealing gutter end caps
Fllow the 2 steps -
1. Prepare the end cap
Clean the surface and the interior if the cap has been dislodged. Use a putty knife for old sealant removal and possibly a hammer to realign the end cap.
2. Apply the sealant
Use a waterproof and weatherproof sealant like Tengyu roof & gutter sealant for example. This adhesive sets in 10 minutes, with full bonding in 24 hours, depending on conditions.
